The Cambodian Association of North Carolina (CANC) celebrated a historic milestone with the graduation of its first cohort from the Khmer DMV Driving Education Program. This initiative marks a significant step forward in promoting language access, road safety, and community integration for Khmer-speaking residents in North Carolina.
The graduation ceremony took place on January 19, 2025, bringing together families, friends, and community leaders to recognize the achievements of the graduates. Through this program, students gained a deeper understanding of North Carolina’s road safety laws, traffic rules, and the steps needed to obtain a driver’s license—a crucial skill for independence and mobility.
A Community Effort: Strong Partnerships and Support
The event was graced by the presence of Chief Thompson of the Greensboro Police Department, Mayor Pro Tem Marikay Abuzuaiter, and Major Lam, whose support underscores the importance of this program in fostering safer roads and stronger communities.
CANC also expressed deep appreciation for the Cone Health Foundation and North Carolina Asian Americans Together (NCAAT), organizations that have provided unwavering support for past programs and continue to empower the community through advocacy and resources.
Special recognition was given to the dedicated educators of the Language Access Program, whose efforts have been instrumental in guiding students toward success. The CANC Board of Directors was also honored for their leadership and steadfast commitment to expanding language access and driving meaningful change.
A Milestone for the Khmer Community in North Carolina
This graduation is more than just a ceremony—it represents progress, empowerment, and inclusion. By equipping Khmer speakers with the knowledge and confidence to navigate the DMV process, the Cambodian Association is helping to remove barriers to transportation and economic opportunities.
“Our graduates are the reason we are here today, and we couldn’t be prouder of their accomplishments!” shared the association in a statement, highlighting the collective effort that made this program possible.
As CANC continues its mission to advocate for language access and community support, this first graduating class sets a strong foundation for future cohorts. The organization remains committed to ensuring that every individual, regardless of their language background, has the tools needed to thrive in their new home.
Congratulations to the graduates of the Khmer DMV Driving Education Program! This achievement is a testament to perseverance, community strength, and the power of education.
